Forum?

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

I’ve been considering setting up a user forum for these machines for a while. I’ve no intention of duplicating the ‘OneUnion’ setup that Elonex have got planned, but more geared towards the type of user who wants to modify their laptop (….and subsequently break it!!).

If you are interested in this sort of thing, please drop us a comment – especially if you’d have the time to contribute (unfortunately I don’t really). If the response is high, I’ll get something sorted out.

Elonex Onet deliveries postponed – email from Elonex

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Like many others who read and comment on this blog I received this email from Elonex earlier today (a couple of days after mine was due):

This email contains important information about your order.

Thank you for completing your order and upgrading to the Elonex ONEt.
Demand for the ONEt free upgrade and accessories has exceeded our estimations, with the majority of customers ordering a range of accessories, including the indispensible wristVAULTs. As a result we are experiencing a delay on deliveries. The official launch of the ONEt is 1st September however Pre-orders, of which you are one, will receive their order in the last week of August, ahead of this product launch.

We sincerely apologise for this delay and for any inconvenience caused. We would therefore like to offer you the following options:
• Continue with your order as it currently is (no action is required by you)
• We are able to temporarily refund your order and re process the payment when your order is dispatched (please call 0870 240 1060)
• If you would like to cancel your order (please call 0870 240 1060 or email us here)

Please accept our sincerest apologies, your order is of the utmost importance to us and we are putting every effort into speeding up all deliveries.

Best Regards

Elonex

I think that it would be fair to say that Elonex seem to be having genuine difficulties and are also taking note about the criticism regarding debiting for the cost of the laptops before they are dispatched. My Asus eeePC took ages to turn up (probably for the same reasons – massive demand, plus manufacturing prolongment?) – but I think that where Asus did not commit to when orders would be fulfilled, Elonex have done, and been tripped up a little.

I’m just glad that this is a surprise for my kids and they’re not constantly asking when it will arrive!

Elonex One deliveries have now started

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

Since my last post, deliveries of the original Elonex One have begun. DoesWhat have received theirs and posted up an initial review here. I’ll be interested to read the follow-up review in a few weeks, especially with respect to the pre-loaded software and the ability to modify it.

Elonex one deliveries started?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

I found this review article on the Elonex Onet. It seems to be a write up of an actual machine, although the first section of the review could have been written without. Maybe the deliveries are starting to come through?

Gone green

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Elonex have posted up this article on their site about the packaging for the new laptops. The packaging is to be 100% recyclable.

I can’t wait to get recycling! I’ve been regularly checking for any progress on the order here.

Elonex One Delivered? Anyone got one yet?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I was just wondering if anyone has actually received their order for an ‘original’ ElonexOne or ElonexOne+? There is much speculation on the web that the free upgrade to the Elonex One T that many people received is to deal with a late delivery issue of the 200,000 units that were offered in the first instance.

My upgrade was logged and a confirmation email stated that delivery would be within 28 Days (so about three weeks to go if that is calender days..). You can track the order using the order reference on Elonex’s site, but theres nothing saying that the laptop has been dispatched.

I’m going to open this up for comments, so please leave a post if you’ve got either your ‘One’ or ‘Onet’. It would be interesting to have comparisions between order/upgrade date and receipt.

New Elonex One t + Specifications

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Take a look at this page that cannot be accessed from the main Elonex site by clicking on this link. I was guided to this from my email to get the free upgrade.

The specifications listed on it are as follows:
LCD Display 7″ Widescreen 800 x 480

Internet Integrated Wi-Fi

Memory Card SD Card slot

Processor 400Mhz

Connections 3 x USB Audio in & Out

Dimensions 21 x 14 x 3cm, 625g – NOW THAT’S LIGHT!! The original ‘One’ is listed at 950g

Storage 1GB Flash SSD, 2GB on the One-t+

Battery Li ion 3hrs usage (as opposed to 4 hours for the original ‘One’)

No mention about the memory, so I’d imagine that this is still 128mb/256mb as for the ‘One’

Neither the One t or the One t+ have a removable keyboard, or bluetooth. Its a real shame about the bluetooth, as this would have given this smashing looking little laptop a little bit of an edge on the Asus EeePC. I’m not sure how much of a loss the lack of removable keyboard would be, especially as the original ‘one’ does not have a touch-screen.

Despite what has been reported on lots of other blogs, the click-through pages from Elonex’s email stated that the retail price for the One-t was £179 with the One-t + at £199. We’ll have to wait and see what the actual pricing is when it is launched.

Software seems to be pretty much the same as the earlier models. The whole package being firmly aimed at making a laptop for kids to take to school an affordable reality. No specific news on the actual software and I imagine that the laptop will still have the Linos Operating System used on the ElonexOne.

Accessories

Whilst selecting my upgrade I was offered a number of accessories. Again, these cannot be accessed from the main Elonex One site. The list was as follows:

‘WristVault’ (4GB = £15, 2GB = £10, 1GB = £7) in Pink, Blue, Red, Black, White and Green. I guess these colours were chosen to complement the colours that the new laptop seems to be available in.

‘One Starter Pack’ (£15) with a memory card reader, headphone and mike set, USB torch/light, RJ45 broadband cable, USB to USB cable, mini USB to USB cable and a neoprene case to store the accessories in.

‘Optical Mouse’ £5

Full size USB keyboard £10

USB speakers £10 in white, pink or black.

A4 inkjet printer £30

Neoprene case £10 in black or pink.

Good luck to Elonex – this looks like a great little laptop. The accessories options are well considered and although not rock-bottom, seem reasonably priced. I’m really looking forward to this device arriving, even though its for my son!

Delivery news – WOW! Upgrade to Elonex Onet+

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

I received this email from Elonex yesterday:

“Thank you for reserving your Elonex ONE / ONE+. We are currently shipping reservation orders and it is now time for you to confirm your order, so we can schedule delivery to you.

We are also offering you a FREE upgrade to our new and improved ONEt laptop; which well tell you more about when you confirm your order.

Please click the following link to review your details, and to choose which accessories you would like to add to your order to help you get the most out of your ONE.”

So I clicked the link and upgraded to the Elonex One t +. It looks a whole load better than the original ‘one’, principally because the screen is thinner as the main part of the computer is beneath the keyboard. I imagine this means that the screen is no longer detatchable for use as a tablet, but aesthetically it gives the machine greater credibility as a ‘proper’ laptop, not just a toy.

Details of the One t + are still not on the official site. I’ll post back later with more information, including a run-through of the upgraded spec.

What is Linos?

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Other than being Linux-based, and a suggestion I read somewhere that the base distribution may be Debian there doesn’t seem to be much on the web about the operating system for the Elonex One.

Wikipedia has a small stub which states “Linos is a embedded distribution of Linux used by Aware Electronics in their A-BOOK products”. I’ve done much Googling but haven’t found a great deal more than this.

I emailed Elonex a couple of days ago asking if there was any more information available on Linos, but haven’t heard back from them yet. As ever, will keep you posted when they do.
