Elonex One Delivery News

Monday, June 16th, 2008

I received this email today from Elonex, detailing out a little more about their plans to fulfill orders:

This email contains important information about your order.
THANKS
Pre-ordered ONE or ONE+ deliveries are scheduled to commence towards the end of June. You will shortly receive a further e-mail advising you of your projected delivery date and requesting the outstanding balance. You will also be invited you to purchase from our range of accessories, which will help you get the most from your new laptop.

The above mentioned e-mails will go out in the order in which the orders were received, with all advices going out within the next four weeks. Early Ship (Beta Test) deliveries will be made by the end of June, followed by the remaining deliveries which will be shipped on a first ordered, first delivered basis. All deliveries will be made prior to the new school year.

Thank you for your patience and interest in the ElonexONE. We feel certain that you or the recipient will get years of great enjoyment and use from the ElonexONE.

THANKS

So, watch this space.

What is Linos?

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Other than being Linux-based, and a suggestion I read somewhere that the base distribution may be Debian there doesn’t seem to be much on the web about the operating system for the Elonex One.

Wikipedia has a small stub which states “Linos is a embedded distribution of Linux used by Aware Electronics in their A-BOOK products”. I’ve done much Googling but haven’t found a great deal more than this.

I emailed Elonex a couple of days ago asking if there was any more information available on Linos, but haven’t heard back from them yet. As ever, will keep you posted when they do.

Elonex One+ Ordered….and waiting

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

I placed my order back in April 2008 for a white Elonex One+. This is intended for my two young sons who have taken a shine to my Asus EeePC.

I’ve opted for the white One+ model which is 20 quid more and has the larger RAM (256MB), 2GB flash storage inbuilt, and bluetooth – a feature that has the edge over the Asus.

I was under the impression that the laptop would be delivered sometime early in June. Late May I received an email that simply said ‘sdfsdf’, that turned out to be a test email from Elonex. In a later email apologising for the error, they said that they would be emailing within the first two weeks of June to confirm my delivery date. I’ve not yet had that email.

A quick check on the news section of Elonex’s site today advises that shipping will begin by the end of June, with all 200,000 orders being fulfilled by September, ready for the new school year. A less optimistic ‘we’ll send you an email when yours is ready’-type comment suggests that they’re running behind the original plan. I wait with interest…

My Asus

I bought an EeePC 701 late 2007 and have been really impressed with it’s portability, ease of use and the ability to use it as a ‘real’ laptop. The computer has ended up being our main computer due to the low power consumption and rapid startup times. In fact, I’m writing this entry on the Asus, connected to the web via a Mobile Broadband modem from 3.

As a Linux user already, I have found the operating system itself stable and straighforward, with minor flaws only creeping in with some of Asus’ less-than-well tested updates that have a tendancy to wipe wireless settings etc. I have enabled the semi-hidden advanced mode (KDE) and extra repositories.
